Today is World Banana Day (see animation below!), but it’s time to drop the bombshell that our little yellow friend is not really a fruit.

Botanically speaking, a banana is classified as two things: its outer part, the skin, is a herb; and the inside bit that tastes so good on toast? That’s actually a berry.

If you were paying attention to our Twitter and Instagram feeds last week, you’ll have seen our fruity teaser posts. We were in fact carefully preparing a World Banana Day themed stop-motion animation for global supermarket chain Aldi, featuring all your favourite banana dishes. Whether you prefer to blend it, smash it, freeze it or bake it, we made an animation for it!

Aldi shared our video to their 260,700 Twitter followers and over 1.3million Facebook fans, catching everybody on their way home from work and giving them something to smile about :D

According to Unruly, enjoyment of video ads increases purchase intent by 97% and brand association by 139% – and nothing is more enjoyable than a stop-motion animation, especially one that contains both cake AND milkshake. We opted for bright colours and plenty of agile fruit in order to leave you craving bananas like nothing else. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve already stopped reading this and rushed out to stock up on banana goodness.
