Yes Lad are a Manchester band managed by Nigel Martin-Smith of Smith's Records. They rose to fame following an appearance on the X Factor, and have since gone on to release three singles. WhiteNoise created the music video for their second single 'Something More', and, after it clocked up over 210,000 YouTube views, we were approached to handle the third single: Nada.
Yes Lad don’t want to be seen as a ‘boyband’. They may be boys in a band, but they’re not a ‘boyband’. They have individual personalities and this music video needed to let this shine through. The brief was to show this edge, this identity; we needed to make them stand out from the crowd. The band wanted something cool and different to break out of the boyband stereotype, so they let us loose with some marker pens in a boardroom. Here’s what we came up with.
The video was shot in one of Manchester’s cult club venues – a restored Victorian mansion covered in graffiti and original features. The theme was to create a wild, energetic house party – the kind of party only cool kids attend. Guests included a drag queen and a child rapper; dancers were clad in gold and sequins; neon lights washed through the location.
Footage was also shot on green screen, with visual effects and bright colour backgrounds added in post. Shots were transformed to look like Super 8 camera footage, paying homage to retro videography.
VFX were added in post production for a quirky, modern look; colour grading was done in Da Vinci Resolve to make the neon pop.
"Yes Lad are getting more and more fans with their uplifting electro dance sound and Nada is going down well on the radio. We wanted a video that would stand out from the rest and I think we have achieved that. I am based in Manchester and I always try to use Northern companies where possible. WhiteNoise have done a great job."
